Archive & Research Division
The Archive and Research Division and its long-term goals were realized through the combined efforts of tribal administration, Cultural Resources staff and the tribal membership. The Division was designed and staffed to meet the rigors of both institutional and academic worlds and currently serves as a model for interested tribes in the development of their own research facilities. Fostering the Division and serving as the repository for the Nation's archive and manuscript collections, the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Cultural Heritage Center (CHC) retains many keys to the spiritual, historical and cultural aspects of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation and its Neshnabek brethren. It is of great importance that these collections be preserved, interpreted and made accessible to tribal members and scholars. The materials, most of which are one-of-a-kind, include tribal administrative and governmental archives, historical and cultural manuscripts, photographic, genealogical and statistical material, maps, and various forms of multimedia.
Many communities have lost their cultural and historical treasures due to the inability and lack of resources to safely preserve and protect those elements. The Archive and Research Division is working diligently to not only conserve said treasures, but spark a renewed interest in the development of cultural awareness. Possessing knowledge and understanding of one's ancestry will enable tribal members to pass on their historical ties and cultural traditions to future generations, perpetuating the strong heritage of Potawatomi people.
